We talk to Candice and Karla, founders of the Australian lifestyle brand known for its effortlessly cool, beach-inspired fashion, to find out what drives their unique vision to blend relaxed coastal aesthetics with a commitment to sustainability. Specializing in swimwear, resort wear, and elevated everyday pieces, Zulu & Zephyr embraces natural fabrics, earthy tones, and timeless silhouettes.

 

Please tell us a little bit about yourself & your background?

As sisters and business partners, we design and create in Byron Bay Australia, pieces for the modern women in her resort era. With previous backgrounds in design and marketing, we joined forces 13 years to create a brand that surpasses trends, reflects our personal lifestyle, and leaves a gentler footprint.

 

Can you tell us about how you came to set up the brand Zulu & Zephyr & what are the true brand values?

We started ZZ in the spirit of doing something creative that we loved, producing beautiful product and working with artists who we admired. Our core values remain the same – we lead in the space of fit, quality and storytelling for each collection with a considered focus on sustainability and better fibre choices. 

 

What does a typical day in the office look like for you as co-founders?

Our best meetings are on the pavement – we start most days doing the Byron Bay Lighthouse Walk which is our type of ‘board room’ before arriving the ZZ HQ and meeting with our team. Here is work in each of our respective fields (Karla – design and Candice – Marketing) whilst overseeing the general business and day to day running. Typically, we are in the design and creative process or off site and on location for an editorial or shoot.

 

 

Zulu & Zephyr prints are instantly recognisable and true to brand – what influences these and how are they designed?

Prints are aften personal andfree from any real thought or intention. Hand drawn and often in line with floral, stripe or shape – ZZ prints are unique to the brand and often what people are drawn to first. 

 

Can you tell us about both your personal style?

We lean into basics and are both obsessed with ZZ neutrals – often splicing in a print that speaks to us from current or upcoming collections. Karla prefers dramatic, relaxed silhouettes whilst Candice currently draws to sport for its easy to wear, comfortable take on Gym to Swim - and even office sometimes.
